Tips to Avoid Gum Diseases

Gum diseases, just like swollen gums or gingivitis, are due to poor oral hygiene and becomes normal with age.  According to research, more than 75 percent of people older than 35 have gum disease.

The occurrence of swollen gums usually indicates an early signs of gum disease. It is a kind of condition wherein gums bleed and sensitive to touch. In later stages, gums start to pull away from the teeth which can lead to infection and even loss of teeth.  Don’t let gum diseases to completely take over your dental health. The following are some simple approaches to avoid gum diseases:

* Eat a healthy diet – Try to avoid candies, sodas and other sugary foods to prevent gum disease from developing.  Also avoid eating foods that can stick to your teeth. Eating a nutritious, balanced diet with various fruits and vegetable can keep you naturally healthy plus it can improve your immune system through helping you combat bad bacteria that cause gum disease. Hard, fibrous fruits and vegetables can help clean and stimulate your gums and teeth.

* Avoid cigarette smoking. People who smoke tobacco and cigarettes are eight times more likely to experience gum disease than non-smokers. Apart from the unwanted effects of smoking to one’s health, smoking can adversely affect some treatment for gum disease.

* Brush and floss your teeth – This is an important daily routine to remove plaque and bacteria.  Brushing reduce plaque build up on the surface of the teeth while flossing removes plaque from in between the teeth and below the gum line.  Some toothpaste that contain anti-bacterial agent can help minimize bacteria from accumulating in the dental regions.

* Avoid Stress. Apart from decreasing your body’s defense mechanisms, stress can also make it harder for your body to combat infections. Additionally, people under stress can tend to clench and grind their teeth, which can lead to the destruction of the supporting tissues of the teeth.

* Use baking soda – Study done in the late 1980s showed that a mixture of baking soda, salt and hydrogen peroxide was as effective as commercial toothpaste at removing plaque and bacteria in the mouth.

* Try other natural cures. Many people try to consider various substances to help remedy gum disease naturally. Rinsing the mouth with hydrogen peroxide could help inhibit bad bacteria growth. And, brushing your teeth with aloe vera gel can help heal swollen gums and reduce plaque build-up.

It is important that we take good care of our oral health in order to prevent undesirable problems to come along the way.  Maintaining a good oral health does not have to be expensive.  You can consider the above tips to remain gum disease free without the need to undergo painful and expensive procedures.
