Alex Salmond, the leader of the SNP, has made it clear that things should change for pensioners. He made the point that at the moment, pensioners are being forced to choose between food and heating oil. This is something that the SNP are keen to change and plan to do what they can to achieve an increase in the winter payments for those most in need.
And choosing between food and heating oil is not only an issue for pensioners in Scotland. This is a similar problem for pensioners all over the UK. The problem gets worse during the winter when demand increases; this can lead to a huge rise in prices. Many pensioners found last winter particularly hard due to the really bad weather that swept across most of the UK.
Even though many of us would be quite shocked and appalled to learn about pensioners having to choose between food and heating, it is actually a problem that exists all over the country. It is a fact that many pensioners will lose their lives during the winter months and lack of heating can be attributed to some of these deaths. Many of these have heating in the home but they are just afraid to turn it on because of the costs involved. And if heating oil continues to rise, this problem will only get bigger and bigger.
Heating in the home should not be viewed as a luxury during the cold winter months. In fact it should be viewed more as a necessity. It is easy to keep your home warm and quite convenient too. So long as you have the money to pay for it. Tackling this problem must be on the agenda of the next Prime Minister whoever that is, as it is disgraceful that people are being made to make a choice between heat and food. Our society and how it is viewed can depend on the way we treat the older generation.
