The controversy at the Grand Prix of Belgium
Fans of Formula One racer Lewis Hamilton are reeling. First, they were delighted to his victory at the recent Grand Prix of Belgium. Later they cried "absence" when he was stripped of this title.
Reason which judges him demoted from first to third? An illegal maneuver helped Lewis Hamilton overtake the rider in front, Kimi Raikkonen. However, Hamilton has given the position of Raikkonen shortly after cutting the chicane. Hamilton went on to cross the finish line first to take Grand Prix of Belgium.
Lewis Hamilton's victory for the McLaren team has been short-lived, however. Hamilton was demoted from first to third place for cutting a chicane. It was a late race rain shower that caused Hamilton to drag the track. Raikkonen then passed him again. However, Raikkonen quickly lost control on a wet track. An accident took him out of the race for good with less than five laps to go.
Spa Francorchamps in the area of Spa in Belgium is famous for its inclement weather. Not only often it rain, the weather tends to turn on a dime. Drivers Grand Prix of Belgium have come to expect this. Little has changed since the Weather-wise very first Grand Prix of Belgium in 1925. Runners are generally prepared for rain. Drivers known for skills in the rain superior handling even the host. Often the rain that gives them their advantage over less skilled riders.
It seems that Lewis Hamilton underestimate the possibility of bad weather. He and almost every other driver chose dry tires for the race. The only one that appears prospective Renault Nelson Piquet Jr. Despite this, it is not enough for one of three major development for Piquet.
Lewis Hamilton managed to recover from the wild spinouts take the first place. It was followed closely by team Ferrari's Felipe Massa and Nick Heidfeld's Sauber. Ultimately, it was Massa and Ferrari team would be declared winner of Belgian Grand Prix 2008 Grand. The decision led to a loss of two points of Hamilton. Loss reduced the gap between Hamilton and Massa rival by a hair width.
A chicane is a series of water barriers on a semicircular track race. Baffles are not fit for racing. Planners can install them in the streets. They are designed to slow the flow of traffic. Ultimately, they are a measure of security. Baffles are a safety measure on the racetrack as well. The riders are forced to slow down before entering the chicane. This prevents them from losing control on the following lines. The Spa-Francorchamps has several hairpin turns and tight corners. Rain does that often these curves dangerous.
It seems that slippery roads may have caused Lewis Hamilton to cut through the chicane. It is unlikely that his maneuver was intentional. Intentional or not, the illegal move can end up costing the title to Hamilton.
Hamilton has only a handful of races from the end of 2008 in which to compensate loss at the Grand Prix of Belgium. Hamilton fans are eagerly waiting to see if Hamilton will be able to recover. The race fans sidelined Raikkonen feel, secondly, that justice was served. Raikkonen may have taken the race if not for his unfortunate accident. Raikkonen won World Championship three of the last four years.
