How far are the most distant stars you can see at a glance?
I've heard variations of 2,000 to 4,000 light years but I'd reduced a little. I know that the Andromeda galaxy can be seen on clear nights and is at a distance of 2.5 milion light years away, but I mean individual stars. Interestingly, when we look at an object so we're seeing, as it was 2.5 million years does not do what it is today. If something happened to the Galaxy tomorrow say that mysteriously disappeared, people on earth it is not known for more than two million years.
Measuring the distance to individual stars is an imprecise science, but a star candidate for the most distant naked eye is Mu Cephei. Most estimates, which put about 3,000 light years away. So on a cosmic scale, all the stars we can see at a glance are very close.
