Pain – The causes of shoulder pain, tests and treatments
Shoulder pain disorders that limit the movements are frequent and are caused by problems with the shoulder joint and surrounding structures. The shoulder is more prone to accidents than other joints in Because of its wide range of movement.
Approximately 13.7 million people visited the doctor's office in 2003 for a shoulder problem, including 3.7 million visits for shoulder and arm sprains and strains. (Source: National Center for Health Statistics, Centers for Disease Control and Prevention's National Ambulatory Care Survey 2003.)
One of the best ways to prevent injuries is to keep physically fit, with a balanced program of aerobics, stretching and strengthening exercises for your entire body. There a variety of exercise programs available at local fitness centers, online services and even downloads for your MP3 player or iPod.
There several reasons causing pain and limited movement of the shoulder joint, including:
1. Rotator cuff disorders
Inflammation can be caused by general wear and tear that occurs with age, activities that require constant or repetitive shoulder motion (especially on shoulder level), heavy lifting, trauma or poor posture. Untreated serious injury and inflammation can cause tendon rotator cuff tear.
The pain associated with rotator cuff problems is generally considered on or off the shoulder, especially when raising the arm or lift something above your head. You can also observe the more pain when lying in bed. Severe injury may cause weakness of the muscles of the shoulder, limited shoulder movement and pain continues.
2. Rotator cuff
In general, the rotator cuff tendons (the thickness of the bands of tissue that connect muscles to bones) that tear, but sometimes occurs in the muscle tear. Severe injury may cause several tendons and muscles tear. There is evidence that their movement doctor can use to help determine which muscle or tendon is ruptured.
3. Frozen shoulder
Frozen shoulder is characterized pain and progressive stiffness of the shoulder. The deepest pain of the shoulder joint and may worsen during the night due to inactivity.
The exact cause of this condition is not known, but sometimes develops as a result of other shoulder injuries. Rest pain, shoulder hurt for too long can cause shoulder muscle tighten the connecting structures, so when a shoulder injury to make an effort to keep losing without putting too much strain on it.
Frozen shoulder can develop spontaneously, especially if you have thyroid problems or diabetes appear to be at greater risk. Most people with shoulder Frozen tends to improve in two years, with or without treatment. Meanwhile, however, can be very painful.
4. Shoulder dislocated shoulder instability
Shoulder dislocation is visibly deformed or out of place, and may have swelling or bruising around the joint. His shoulder movement will very limited. Your doctor can usually put the shoulder bone into place using gentle movements.
If you have a break, bear in mind that joint shoulder may become unstable and sensitive to repeated shocks. This causes pain and instability when lifting the arm or move it away from your body. Shoulder may feel like if it slips out of place when you lift your arms above your head.
5. Arthritis
Arthritis causes progressive joint pain, tenderness, swelling and stiffness. Rheumatoid arthritis and osteoarthritis affects the shoulder joint.
Sometimes shoulder pain can be caused by problems in the neck or a mixture of several different problems. A doctor's visit is almost always necessary when a shoulder problem because in rare cases, shoulder pain can be caused by infection, nerve problems, or a tumor in other parts of your body.
As with any medical problem, a problem in the shoulder is usually diagnosed using a process three parts:
• Medical history – Tell your doctor of any accident or any other obstacles that could cause pain.
• Physical Exam – Your doctor will examine the meaning of the injury and discover the limits of the location of travel, pain, and the degree of instability of the joint.
• Testing – The doctor may order one or more tests down for an accurate diagnosis.
What tests are needed to determine the cause of your shoulder pain?
Your doctor will determine the cause of your pain depending on your symptoms and physical examination. When pain is felt, both at rest and during movement of the shoulder is a clue as to the cause of shoulder pain. Your doctor may also test their strength and range of motion shoulder on his shoulder.
You may need an x-ray or other tests such as ultrasound or MRI. Sometimes arthroscopy is needed. In this test, your doctor can look inside the shoulder joint with a small telescopic instrument with a camera on the end. It's not as painful as it might seem.
How does your shoulder pain will be treated
In addition to relieving pain, treatment aims to restore mobility on his shoulder. The choice of treatment depends on the extent of his shoulder problem and the level of pain.
analgesics such as nonsteroidal antiinflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) are often used as initial treatment for shoulder pain. Ibuprofen is the best and aspirin should be avoided.
Another simple way to relieve shoulder pain by applying an ice pack on his shoulder for 10 minutes at a time three or four times a day. Cold compresses will reduce inflammation and are more useful when used for the first few days after the shoulder injury. After that, you can switch to using a hot water bottle, intermittent application of heat can help relax the muscles.
A heating pad used in bed at night will remain frozen shoulder.
You should rest the shoulder for a couple of days after the injury, and if you have dislocated the shoulder, may need to rest your arm in a sling or splint for several weeks after the city was manipulated into place.
However, the majority of shoulder problems is not a good idea to rest too long. Although you should avoid strenuous activities and lifting heavy objects, move the shoulder to ensure that you regain full use of the joint. Upon returning to their normal activities as soon as possible (within the limits of disability and pain) You can help prevent shoulder joint stiffness up.
Physiotherapy may help treat pain in the shoulder.
Physical therapy can help improve your strength and flexibility of the shoulders and relieve pain associated with most of shoulder problems. Physiotherapists use a variety of different treatments, including Massage Therapy, ultrasound, laser therapy and electrical nerve stimulation transcutaneous stimulation (TENS) – A gentle therapy that uses electrical currents to treat pain.
Recording the shoulder joint can also help stabilize and reduce pain during activities. Your doctor will refer to physiotherapist is good, I feel the extent of his injury physiotherapy orders.
The Physical therapists can also teach special rehabilitation exercises to stretch and strengthen muscles of the rotator cuff of the shoulder. Exercises that improve your range of motion to help reduce pain and stiffness that occurs after a period of immobility. Range of motion exercises may be followed by exercises Resistance and weight training to strengthen muscles.
Steroid injections can be effective, but with caution.
Depending the cause of the problem in the shoulder, corticosteroid injections may be given to relieve pain in the short term. Corticosteroids, often mixed with an anesthetic local, reduces inflammation and allows you to move your shoulder in comfort. Make sure you understand what's involved in this type of treatment to include effects long term in your body. The jury is still out on the impact of such treatment.
Surgery may be needed to process your problem shoulder.
Like most people improve the above treatments, only 10 percent of people with shoulder problems can be treated with surgery. People with shoulder instability or sleeve cuff problems unresponsive to less invasive treatments may benefit from surgery, and shoulder joint replacement can be considered as people with degenerative arthritis.
There are also conditions that must be addressed for the first time in a transaction, including cuff dislocated shoulder rotator, which can be reduced (recovery) with simple maneuvers manual. Sometimes, frozen shoulder is treated with manipulation under anesthesia called. In this therapy, the shoulder is slightly moved while you are under general anesthesia to help improve your range of motion and of course to avoid pain.
Therefore, make sure not to self-diagnose your shoulder problem, consult your doctor. Please note that this idea is not good for stays too long or they will harden. Use cold and heat intermittently to accelerate the Healing process. Avoid strenuous activities and heavy lifting, but remember to move your shoulder to make sure to regain full use of the joint return to their normal activities as soon as possible and is making full use of the shoulder in a reasonable time.
But if you still experiencing pain, listen, this is a signal to try to say something is still wrong with my shoulder.
