How to write great dialogue for a script
By Debra Hildebrand
One of the hardest parts of writing a script is the creation large captivating dialogue. The main reason is because the dialogue is not real life speech. It may sound like that when you hear it on the screen, but if you really focus on what the characters are saying dialogue you will notice is much more focused script.
With this in mind, there are some very important elements to writing the kind of dialogue that can move along a story by creating the right environment and to shape the history not just tell the story.
The dialogue to convey emotion, does not explain
The first time I reflect back on a Movie you've seen is likely to see the image of the characters on the screen. You can think of dialogue later, but not necessarily remember the words. And that is why one of the most important parts of writing dialogue is to remember to keep the lines short.
One of the hardest parts of writing scripts for new writers is to create a dialogue that evokes the emotion and moves along the story without further explanation of the plot, called forced exposure. forced exposure is a character tells the story total or explains the action, as some felony dramas (think "Murder She Wrote") have the crime buster do at the end of the story. They summarize the evolution of the bad was captured. It is particularly interesting in writing. So rather than focus on writing short dialogue, crisp sound that cuts through and delivers what right amount of information.
However, good writing dialogue is not just to keep it short. Also usually trying to communicate in a unique way. This is done through subtext. It is the hidden meaning behind the words. It's like when a friend rolls her eyes and says, "Yes. Grande. "You knows she is really thinking that you just suggested something really stupid.
One of the best examples of subtext comes from a great book by David Trottier called "The Screenwriter's Bible. "It refers to a scene from the classic movie" Doom ". In The Movie Fred McMurray is an insurance salesman automotive uses a metaphor to express their interest by Barbara Stanwyck. She says: "There is a speed limit in this state, Mr. Neff. Fifty and five miles per hour. "He asks how fast he was going. She says," About ninety years. "To which he says:" Suppose get off the bike and give me a ticket. "She says," Suppose I leave you with a warning. "That's true subtext heat and humidity.
Two Ways to improve the dialogue script
Write interesting, meaningful dialogue is not an easy task. However, you can help with these two methods.
Firstly, after writing his dialogue, rewrite it. Look at the words and see if you can modify to make them more interesting or eliminate any word to make the language more concise. Instead of stating the obvious, "so you can shoot Shoot," try something clever, "Go ahead. Make my day. "
The second tip is to read your dialogue aloud. Listen how it sounds. Is the flow of your tongue naturally or it sounds strange? Do moves over the scene and reveal something about one of the characters or can be removed and not affect the story at all?
The idea is that dialogue script should be as creative as the idea of history and should not increase at the expense of the action. Master concise, interesting dialogue full of subtext and you are going to write great dialogue of your script at any time.
