10) Rory McIlroy cheerful, freckled face is perhaps the face of golf more than I will remember as the representation , 2009, in part, I suppose, because we all saw both he and his heroic teenager took his world ranking from 50th after his first European Tour victory in the Dubai Desert Classic in January for an incredible ninth after his third place in the season to close the Dubai World Championship, but even more so, I suppose, because I saw his face covered with curly hair as the new face of golf in the future. Right now he stands at Tiger Woods once stood. Hopefully Stars Holywood Northern Ireland can emulate the ongoing brilliance of Tiger, but stay away from the kind of thing that now threaten to cost the World No. 1 well.

9) There were some great shots played around the world this year, but for me the most unforgettable of them all was the magnificent approach YE Yang of South Korea shot on the 18th hole on the final day of the final major of the season, the U.S. PGA Championship. I had to make a birdie to become the first Asian winner of a major in history and the first man to beat Tiger Woods in a major where the best golfer in the world of the 21st century had been heading in a final round. The fact that Yang was playing huge intimidating figure Woods made things even more difficult, however, despite being under the Greatest pressure imaginable, Yang underdog the shot of his life. The ball seemed to be guided by radar, because the arrow on the pin and dropped four or five feet away for an easy birdie that gave me his famous victory and a rare memory.

Gary Player has his critics, especially in his native South Africa, where some see it as bragging – "I do 1000 abs a day "- and too quick to give a lecture on how people should live their lives, but for a man of eighty years, remains a wonderful ambassador for golf. And he showed earlier this year in public driving range in Cape Town, where I realized how silent practice by Himself at one end of it.
