Five British films you must see
The British Film Industry has seen many peaks and valleys since the beginning in the early 20th century. Film began in the UK with William Friese Greene produced the first known projected moving image on celluloid film. Over the next 119 years there have been many successes and failures that have influenced not only the film industry but British culture.
Moviegoers will have their favorites that have shaken only inspired and entertaining them through different times of his life and this list is exactly that. I've been watching British films for nearly thirty years and have seen people Gandhi (1983), The Full Monty (1997) and The Queen (2006) Impact of world cinema, while several others have tasted success in the United Kingdom.
There is no particular formula for a successful British film, but my options for the 'Five British films that have to do "do tend to have a distinct feeling British. Whether the location, accent, dialect or cultural references – each of my five British films is a Production British excellence.
A Clockwork Orange (1971)
Directed by Stanley Kubrick and set in a futuristic London, A Clockwork Orange is based on the novel of the same name by Anthony Burgess. The film received critical acclaim at its premiere as winning four nominations for Academy Awards. However, after a string of crimes of imitation call, Kubrick withdrew the film after receiving several anonymous death threats.
It was not to the new film release in 1999 that the British public were legally able to see this masterpiece of film in almost 27 years. The film seems timeless as the futuristic setting has not aged at all in nearly three decades on the shelf. The characters speak in a mixture of cockney and Russian that adds an additional dimension to the dystopian reality. Heavily influencing pop culture of a music video for Blur's Halloween costume Bart Simpson, A Clockwork Orange still being one of the most influential and controversial films of All Time.
Trainspotting (1996)
Directed by Danny Boyle, Trainspotting follows the story Mark Renton and a group of his "friends", most of whom are heroin addicts. Located in Edinburgh, history shows explicitly the issues with the consumption of intravenous drugs and away from glorifying it, ensure the audience condemn the actions of the characters.
The role of Renton helped launch the career of Ewan McGregor as he escapes his parasitic friends and makes a new life free of heroin. The distaste that surrounds the film and its characters make each scene as an unavoidable Renton continually tries to break free and 'choose life. " Like the protagonist is successful and the final credits roll you will feel as if been a very special film.
Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels (1998)
In 1998, the advent of the modern British gangster film with Guy Ritchie Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels. Cool, dirty and classy, the film was a great success of British films, when gangsters were virtually nonexistent. The film also introduced former footballer Vinnie Jones as an Actor, and Jason Statham. The combination of uber-cool soundtrack with cockney accents and costumes well-cut and you have the perfect London gangster film.
Based on the theft of drugs and cash, the plot weaves multiple stories in a climatic shootout that results in almost everyone is dead. The film sparked a wave of interest in the Brit-films and many other films treated to replicate its success, however, Guy Ritchie came closest to that reuses many of the actors for a Movie called Snatch similar. Modern British gangster film was back, 26 years after Michael Caine set the standard in Get Carter.
28 days later (2002)
The only real Horror film the list, 28 days after he broke the mold when it exploded onto the big screen in 2002. Apparently influenced by the George A. Romero 'Dead' films, the second film by Danny Boyle on the list was mostly shot in digital video. However, this was not the main talking point when the film was released, by Birth a new zombie. A highly contagious virus has spread throughout the United Kingdom and infected most of the UK population, but unlike Romero, Boyle's zombies are fast, aggressive hunters.
The plot follows Jim as he wakes from a coma to find London's deserted streets. These dramatic, beautiful scenes where Westminster Bridge, Piccadilly Circus and Oxford Street are completely empty were achieved when the police helped temporarily block off areas of London short intervals. The result is truly impressive, and adds a haunting loneliness to the plight of Jim in their search for survivors. The film influenced clearly in the new 2004 version of Dawn of the Dead Romero and zombie behavior bears an uncanny resemblance to that of the 28 Days Later. Zombie movies would never be the same again, and I should mention the other Brit-Zombie film 'Shaun of the Dead' that again changed the face of modern horror with a touch of comedy in film zombie classic.
Dead Man's Shoes (2004)
You may be my favorite performance of any single agent in any film, Paddy Considine exacts revenge perfect as Richard in Dead Man's Shoes. Located in the Midlands, as with all films of Shane Meadows, Considine returns to his hometown after a period serving in the British army. The audience quickly begins to realize that Richard is looking to avenge a group of thugs that have bedeviled his brother. Considine performance is mesmerizing as he moves from psychotic to fraternal in the blink of an eye.
As the story progresses, the film shows various flashbacks to when Richard's brother Anthony was the victim of a group of local petty criminals. Anthony is played superbly by Toby Hebbell in his role as the film progress. Richard offices of each member of the gang, one by one until it is just him and the more passive bully left. He argues to kill so you can establish with his brother and after threatening the children of the man suffers a fatal stab wound to the heart.
This is a movie amazing with some of the best performances of low-profile actors. Shane Meadows has written and directed other films that come very close to the Top 5 with a local Romeo Brass and more recently, This Is England. Meadows is a rising star in British cinema and has the potential to be one of the world's most prestigious Directors.
That is to say the top five British films to see before you die. Agree or disagree, make sure you watch these movies and not always feel that Hollywood is the only place that Good Films are made. British films have been doing great for many years and will continue for many years to come.
