The life and work of Fidel Castro
Fidel Alejandro Castro Ruz was born in Biran, Cuba in 1926, the son of a Galician immigrant mother and Cuban. In 1945, he began to study law at the University of Havana. He immediately became active in the volatile cultural, political and even dangerous rogue in college. In 1947, joined the Orthodox Party of Eduardo Chibas Party. The Orthodox Party publicly exposed corruption and demanded reform of the welfare state, also aimed to instill a strong sense of national identity among Cubans, to establish the economic independence of Cuba from the United States and dismantle the elite control politics postponed Cuban. In 1951, while running for president, Chibas committed suicide during a live radio broadcast to illustrate how he was sorry he could not keep his promise to expose corruption within the government. While in college, Castro married Mirta Diaz Balart, a philosophy student from a wealthy Cuban family, Castro thus became exposed to the lifestyles of the Cuban elite. In 1950, Castro graduated with a law degree, he began to practice law in a small firm in Havana. In 1952, only 25 years old who ran for the Cuban parliament, but just before the election was overthrown the government of Fulgencio Batista, who established a dictatorship. As discontent grew over the Batista regime, Castro abandoned his law practice and formed an underground organization that it conspired to overthrow Batista. On July 26, 1953, attacked the Moncada barracks, was a disaster, with sixty of the hundred and thirty-five rebels dead. Castro was captured, tried and sentenced to fifteen years in prison.
Castro was released after two years under a general amnesty, he left Cuba to Mexico with the intention to reorganize and train movement. He founded the July 26 movement, which was to concentrate on guerrilla tactics to end Batista regime. On November 26, 1956, Castro, with only 81 followers sailed to Cuba to start a rebellion. After landing, the Castro's forces were decimated, only 20 survived and sought refuge in the mountains of the Sierra Maestra. From his camp, which began recruiting, contact with resistance groups and conducting a guerrilla campaign. Although heavily outnumbered, Castro's forces scored a series of decisive victories against the armies Batista finally take Havana on December 31, 1958. Batista fled Cuba, on February 16, 1959, Castro took over as Prime Minister of Cuba. Immediately, the tension developed with the United States, Castro began expropriating property owned by U.S. corporations.
Castro denied that he was a Communist but in May 1959, signed the first Agrarian Reform land is limited to less than 1,000 acres and forbade foreign land ownership. The Soviet Union sent more than one hundred Spanish-speaking counselors to organize defense committees of the Revolution. In February 1960, Cuba signed an agreement to buy oil from the USSR, refineries U.S. property in Cuba refused to process the oil, simply Castro expropriated U.S. broke diplomatic relations. This created the mold, Cuba became closer to the USSR through a series of pacts and agreements, and Cuba and the U.S. became more and more distant.
In June 1960, Eisenhower reduced quotas on sugar imports from Cuba by seven million tonnes, in response, Cuba nationalized some $ 850 million U.S. property. Castro continued to nationalize industry, collectivized agriculture and to expropriate property owned by Cubans and non-Cubans alike. While these policies were popular among the poor, disenfranchised both the middle and upper classes and alienated many former supporters of the revolution. More than a million Cubans left the country later, forming an anti-Castro lobby in Miami, which was financially supported by successive U.S. administrations. On April 17, 1961, approximately 1,400 members of the CIA trained a force of Cuban exiles landed at the Bay of Pigs with the intent to overthrow the government, the U.S. denied any involvement. Cuba Armed Forces repelled within three days. In a speech broadcast nationwide on December 2, 1961, Castro declared that he was a Marxist-Leninist and that Cuba was adopting Communism. U.S. responded by imposing an embargo on Cuba and the ban on Americans visiting there. Soviet Premier Nikita Khrushchev the idea of placing planned missiles in Cuba to act as a deterrent to a possible U.S. invasion. U.S. learned of the plan and implemented a quarantine around Cuba, saying it would to intercept a ship which has violated. Khrushchev agreed to remove the missiles if the U.S. pledged not to invade Cuba and the removal of Soviet missiles from Turkey and Italy. Both sides agreed and the missiles were removed, but tensions between Cuba and the U.S. would remain very tense.
