Memories of 1920 Hollywood Movie – The silent era
Originating as a novelty of the new century, the cinema became a multi-million of dollars in the industry. In fact, by early 1920, the business of making movies had become the fifth largest industry in the U.S. and would become one of the most important and influential communication tools and entertainment of the 20th century.
The vast majority of Films produced during the decade of 1920 were silent movies. As the industry grew, and the Film Making became more expensive, the various aspects of Film Production divided into individual components, such as: writing, Directing, costumes, etc, and it became almost an assembly line in its creation.
During the While the First World War was underway, the "study" system evolved in Hollywood and who dominate the film industry for a period of about 25 years. Usually credited with the creation of this system Adolph Zukor, William Fox, Carl Laemmle y. In essence, the system provided for a Movie Studio chief production with virtually total control over a film director and its Stars.
With nearly 90 percent of U.S. films making and marketing of five large studies, these studies were able to monopolize Hollywood for the next 50 years. These five studies were: Warner Bros. Pictures, Famous Players-Lasky Corporation (renamed Paramount Pictures in 1935), RKO Pictures, Inc. Loew's (later to become Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer) and Fox Film Corporation / Foundation (later to become 20th Century Fox).
film technology continued to advance during the decade, and the development of the microphone of the film industry was about to undergo dramatic change. However, this progress was not entirely welcomed by all. Many of the biggest stars of the silent film era would be unable to make the transition from silent films to sound. "Silent film fans had in their minds his own idea on "spoken sound" of actors and actresses who loved and had difficulties in accepting the actual sound of many voices.
Some of the largest silent film star can not survive this new partnership between vision and sound films were Douglas Fairbanks Clara Bow, John Gilbert, and Mary Pickford. Fortunately, many other stars that were loved by the public did successfully. Including John Barrymore, Mary Astor, William Powell, Ronald Colman, Gary Cooper, Laurel and Hardy, Greta Garbo, and some time later, Charlie Chaplin, who even liked the Adding sound to movies.
Sound reached, indicating the end of the silent film era, and it was here to stay.
